May brings a vibrant array of cultural events to New York City as warmer temperatures invite residents and visitors alike to explore outdoor venues, seasonal festivals, and artistic performances throughout the five boroughs.
Little Island, the floating park in Hudson River Park, launches its summer season this month with an ambitious lineup of performances. The park has “established itself as one of the city’s most vital sources of low-cost high culture” with events held in its 687-seat open-air amphitheater, smaller performance stage, and pop-up locations throughout the space Time Out New York. This year’s programming includes world premieres by major artists spanning music, dance, and theater.
The New York City Ballet’s Spring 2025 season continues at Lincoln Center with a spectacular lineup of classical and contemporary works. The company will showcase “the stunning choreography of Balanchine, Masters at Work” in performances ranging from “Romeo & Juliet” to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “La Valse” Experism. Tickets are available through June 1 at the David H. Koch Theater.
Fleet Week returns to New York from May 21-27, welcoming Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel to the city. Visitors can enjoy “events like the Parade of Ships, embarking on a General Public Ship Tour, or watching the Navy Dive Tank in Times Square” Experism with ship tours available at the Staten Island Homeport Pier and Manhattan Pier 88 South. All Fleet Week events are free and open to the public.
The Dance Parade celebrates its 19th anniversary on May 17 in Sunset Park, featuring over 10,000 dancers, colorful floats, DJs, and live music showcasing dance styles from around the world. The event includes dance lessons for participants and food vendors representing global cuisines.
Sports enthusiasts can catch professional teams in action throughout the month. The Yankees and Mets both play multiple home games, while the New York Knicks continue their playoff run and the women’s basketball season kicks off with the New York Liberty taking on the Las Vegas Aces on May 17.
For art lovers, Macy’s annual Flower Show runs through May 11 at the Herald Square flagship store. This year’s display “transforms the store’s main floor, balcony and windows” into “a whimsical oasis featuring the beauty and fragrance of spring” Time Out New York with thousands of plants and flowers arranged in elaborate displays.
The month culminates with Memorial Day parades across the city on Monday, May 26, offering opportunities to honor veterans and those who have served. These community events include music, ceremonial tributes, and family activities throughout the five boroughs.
