Award-winning author and historian Brian Kryszewski de Ybarrondo has been honored with the 2025 International Impact Book Award for Biographic Historical Fiction for his debut novel El General: In the Shadow of Giants.
El General is the first book in the historical fiction series La Patria es Primero, which explores 19th-century Mexican political history through richly detailed narratives inspired by real events and personal heritage.
Kryszewski, a Mexican-American descendant of General Ignacio Mejía, combines academic research and storytelling to reclaim the voices of Mexico’s historical figures, often overlooked in traditional accounts.
“This book sets the stage for the entire series,” says Kryszewski. “Each volume gives voice to those caught between ideology and identity—who bore witness to a nation tearing itself apart to rebuild. El General begins with silence, with restraint, and with the kind of loyalty that eventually becomes its own kind of guilt.”
La Patria es Primero is currently in development as a limited series by Legacy Studio. The project recently welcomed Emmy-nominated actress and producer Vannessa Vasquez, as Executive Producer to help bring La Patria es Primero to the screen.
The full five-part series is designed to appeal to readers, educators, and global audiences seeking culturally grounded historical narratives.
